3-Hydroxyoctanoic acid is a hydroxylated fatty acid present in the LPS of *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* and in methyl-branched poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) polymers. This compound acts as an agonist of the orphan receptor GPR109B, leading to increased intracellular calcium in human neutrophils. It also prevents lipolysis in human adipocytes and is observed to be upregulated in human plasma following a ketogenic diet. Studies have shown increased plasma levels in human male runners after exhaustion and in a mouse model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) fed a high-glycemic diet.
