Orcein is an acetic nuclear counterstain and results in a red to pink color. Orecin creates distinct and effective color contrast when used in conjunction with blue chromogenic substrates. Orcein can be used following in situ hybridization or immunohistochemical staining of tissues or cells. Acetic orcein has also been described to stain mast cells, basophilic cytoplasm, and cartilage.
