OFPBL Agar is a selective and differential medium designed for the isolation and enumeration of Burkholderia cepacia complex organisms. It is commonly used in clinical microbiology, especially for cystic fibrosis respiratory samples, and in industrial quality control to detect contamination in non sterile pharmaceutical or cosmetic products. The medium is based on an oxidation fermentation formulation and contains selective agents such as polymyxin B and bacitracin to suppress competing bacteria. Lactose is included as the carbohydrate source, while bromothymol blue acts as the pH indicator to visualize metabolic activity. Burkholderia cepacia oxidizes lactose and produces characteristic color changes that assist identification. This formulation helps laboratories detect the organism in complex samples where mixed microbial populations are present.
