This gene encodes a protein from the 14-3-3 family which mediates signal transduction by binding phosphoserine-containing proteins This highly conserved protein family is present in both plants and mammals with the human protein 99% identical to its mouse and rat counterparts It is upregulated in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis The gene contains a 6 bp tandem repeat in its 5 UTR but no correlation with disease severity has been found The protein interacts with RAF1 and CDC25 phosphatases suggesting involvement in mitogenic signaling and cell cycle regulation Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified
