2-Ketoglutaric acid potassium is an intermediate in ATP/GTP production within the Krebs cycle and a reversible, orally active inhibitor of tyrosinase (IC50 = 15 mM). It acts as the primary carbon skeleton for nitrogen-assimilatory reactions. It suppresses abnormal intestinal permeability, prevents tight junction protein delocalization, and inhibits TNFα expression in vitro and in vivo. It binds to TAK1, hindering TRAF6-TAK1 interaction, and alleviates inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) symptoms and gut microbiota dysbiosis.
- Reduces and detoxifies ammonia levels.
- Protective against lipid peroxidation.
- Neuroprotective effect against cyanide poisoning.
- Acts as a precursor for amino acids and nucleotides.
- Improves gut microbiota dysbiosis.
