Phenylethyl Alcohol (PEA) Agar, 15×100mm plates supplied in packs of 10, is a selective culture medium formulated for the isolation of Gram positive bacteria from mixed clinical or environmental specimens. The presence of phenylethyl alcohol inhibits the growth of Gram negative organisms by interfering with DNA synthesis, allowing clearer recovery of Gram positive cocci such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species. This selective property makes PEA agar particularly useful when samples contain mixed microbial populations where Gram negative bacteria might otherwise overgrow the culture. The medium is commonly used in clinical microbiology, research laboratories, and quality control environments. Each plate is pre poured with sterile agar to a consistent depth to ensure reliable growth conditions and reproducible laboratory results.
