Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar (PEA Agar) with 5% Sheep Blood is a selective and differential culture medium used for isolating Gram positive organisms, particularly Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species, from mixed clinical or environmental samples. Phenylethyl alcohol inhibits the growth of many Gram negative bacteria by disrupting DNA synthesis and altering membrane permeability, preventing organisms such as Proteus and Pseudomonas from overgrowing cultures. The addition of 5% defibrinated sheep blood supplies essential growth factors and enables observation of hemolytic reactions, allowing differentiation based on hemolysis patterns. Each plate is pre poured with approximately 20mL of sterile agar to provide optimal surface depth for streaking and incubation. These ready to use plates are widely utilized in clinical laboratories, hospitals, diagnostic testing facilities, and microbiology research environments.
