This gene encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family of receptor tyrosine kinases It has a neuregulin binding domain but lacks an active kinase domain so it cannot directly signal into the cell However it forms heterodimers with other EGFR family members that possess kinase activity activating pathways that regulate cell proliferation and differentiation Gene amplification or overexpression is observed in various cancers including prostate bladder and breast tumors Alternate splice variants of this gene encode different isoforms one of which lacks the intermembrane region and is secreted to modulate the activity of the membrane-bound form Additional splice variants have been identified but not fully characterized
