Plate Count Agar (PCA), also known as Standard Methods Agar (SMA), is a widely used microbiological medium designed for the enumeration of viable aerobic bacteria in food, water, dairy, pharmaceutical, and environmental samples. The nutrient rich formulation supports the growth of a broad range of non fastidious microorganisms and is commonly used to determine total viable bacterial counts in accordance with USP, FDA, and ISO testing methods. Each plate contains approximately 20 mL of sterile, pre poured medium in a standard 100 × 15 mm petri dish, ensuring consistent preparation and reduced laboratory workload. PCA plates enable clear colony development for accurate microbial counting and are commonly used in quality control, environmental monitoring, and routine microbiological testing programs.
