Used to oxidize glycols to aldehydes.

  • A crucial component in the Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) staining method
  • This method is used to detect and stain various polysaccharides in tissues, including glycogen, neutral mucous substances, basement membranes, and other polysaccharides
  • The solution oxidizes these compounds, releasing aldehyde groups that react with the Schiff reagent, resulting in a magenta staining visible under the microscope
