Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) without tartaric acid is a general purpose fungal culture medium used for the cultivation and enumeration of yeasts and molds. Unlike acidified PDA formulations, this medium retains the standard pH of approximately 5.6, allowing a wider range of fungi to grow while maintaining the classic PDA nutrient composition. The formulation includes potato infusion for rich nutrients that encourage sporulation and pigment development, while dextrose provides an energy source for fungal metabolism. This product is poured as a 25 mL deep fill plate, providing a larger moisture reservoir than standard plates. The additional depth helps prevent agar drying and cracking during extended incubation periods commonly required for slow growing fungal organisms.
