A variety of lipases, including acid lipase in lingual gland or stomach and pancreatic lipase, hydrolyze triacylglycerol to produce monoacylglycerols and free fatty acids in gastrointestinal tract. Phospholipase A2s (PLA2s) are a family of esterases that hydrolyze the sn-2-acyl ester bond in glycerophospholipid molecules to release fatty acids. These enzymes are generally calcium-dependent and localizes both intra- and extracellularly. A lipid-hydrolyzing enzyme, phospholipase B/lipase (PLB/LIP), associated with intestinal brush border membranes display broad lipolytic activities.
