Antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxic and antialgal activity. Has been shown to inhibit NADPH oxidase activation in macrophages. Induces apoptosis by phosphorylation of p38 MAP kinase. Additionally, inhibits the association of p47-phox and Rac (NADPH oxidase cytosolic components) to the plasma membrane in macrophages. Alternative name: Prodigiosine, 4-Methoxy-5-[(5-methyl-4-pentyl-2H-pyrrol-2-ylidene)methyl]-2,2'-bi[1H-pyrrole]. Purity: ≥95% (HPLC). Appearance: Yellow to dark red solid.
