R2A Agar is a low nutrient culture medium specifically designed for the recovery and enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria from treated potable water, purified water systems, and pharmaceutical process water. Unlike nutrient rich media that favor fast growing organisms, R2A contains reduced levels of peptone, yeast extract, and glucose, allowing slow growing or stressed bacteria to recover and develop colonies. This formulation helps prevent nutrient shock that can occur when oligotrophic water bacteria are exposed to rich media. Because colonies develop more slowly, plates are typically incubated for extended periods of five to seven days, enabling detection of organisms that might otherwise be missed. R2A Agar is widely used for heterotrophic plate count testing and routine monitoring of water quality.
