This gene encodes a protein in the RAS superfamily a group of small GTP/GDP-binding proteins ( 200 amino acids) involved in intracellular signaling RAB/YPT family members including this protein may help transport proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi and plasma membrane The protein shares high sequence similarity with dog RAB8 (97%) and mouse MEL (96%) and contains the four conserved GTP/GDP-binding sites typical of RAS proteins It also has a C-terminal CAAX motif common in RAS proteins but absent in most RAB/YPT proteins Although originally identified as a transforming gene from a melanoma cell line no clear link between this gene (MEL) and malignant melanoma has been established It is located about 800 kb downstream of MY09B on chromosome 19p13 1
