Inhibit gram-positive microorganisms and facultative anaerobic bacteria and select for gram-negative bacilli with Thermo Scientific™ Anaerobic KV Blood Agar [The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) formulation] with kanamycin and vancomycin.
Formulated by V.R. Dowell and T.M Hawkins at the CDC in Atlanta Georgia1, Anaerobic Blood Agar (CDC) supports the growth and typical pigmentation of fastidious, slow-growing and other clinically important anaerobes.
Isolate and cultivate anaerobic organisms, including fastidious strains using the solid medium Remel Anaerobic KV Blood Agar (CDC formulation) with kanamycin and vancomycin.
- Selective: Kanamycin and vancomycin are antibiotics which inhibit gram-positive organisms and facultative anaerobic bacteria and select for gram-negative bacilli.

Anaerobic Blood Agar (CDC) base contains peptones that supply nitrogenous substances and amino acids necessary for the growth of anaerobic bacteria. Yeast extract provides B-complex vitamins and serves as a growth enhancer. Hemin, vitamin K and sheep blood stimulate the growth of anaerobes. Sodium chloride is a source of essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Kanamycin and vancomycin are antibiotics which inhibit gram-positive organisms and facultative anaerobic bacteria and select for gram-negative bacilli.
