Isolate and presumptively identify Bacteroides fragilis group from clinical specimens with this selective, ready-to-use medium.
Isolate and presumptively identify Bacteroides fragilis group from clinical specimens with the selective, differential Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Bacteroides Fragilis Isolation Agar. The selectivity of this medium is provided by the addition of gentamicin and bile. Differentiation is facilitated by the hydrolysis of esculin to esculitin by the Bacteroides fragilis group. Ferric ammonium citrate is added to the medium to react with esculetin and produce a brown-black complex surrounding the colony.
Bacteroides fragilis is an obligately anaerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. It is part of the normal microbiota of the human colon and is generally commensal, but can cause infection if displaced into the bloodstream or surrounding tissue following surgery, disease, or trauma.
Bacteroides Fragilis Isolation Agar is a selective and differential medium for recovery and presumptive identification of Bacteroides fragilis group.
- Easy-to-read: Bacteroides fragilis colonies are easy to read due to brown-black complex surrounding the colonies.
- Selective: gentamicin and bile make the medium selective for Bacteroides fragilis. Gentamicin inhibits most facultative anaerobes and bile inhibits anaerobic gram-negative bacilli with the exception of Bacteroides fragilis group and other Bacteroids and Fusobacteria.
