Selectively isolate Streptococcus pneumoniae from clinical specimens with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Blood Agar with Gentamicin. The addition of 5% sheep blood enriches the medium by providing the essential growth factors and allows hemolytic rections to be observed. Gentamicin is a selective agent inhibitory to most Enterobacteriaceae, Neisseri, and Staphylococcus spp.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common cause of otitis media, an infection of the ear canal. Due to increased resistance to antimicrobial agents, recovery of S.pneumoniae in culture and subsequent antimicrobial susceptibility testing has become essential. Blood Agar with Gentamicin allows recovery of isloated colonies and allows initiation of confirmatory procedures from the primary isolation plate.
