Rapidly detect butyrate esterase to presumptively identify Moraxella catarrhalis isolated from clinical specimens with this ready-to-use, reagent-impregnated disk.

Detect butyrate esterase to rapidly identify Moraxella catarrhalis isolated from clinical specimens with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Catarrhalis Test Disk.

The rapid identification of Moraxella catarrhalis is important, since most strains produce beta-lactamase and are resistant to penicillin and ampicillin. Conventional methods used to identify M. catarrhalis may take up to 48 hours to perform3,4. In 1962, Berger suggested that detection of butyrate esterase can be used as a rapid method to identify M. catarrhalis.1

Detect butyrate esterase to presumptively identify Moraxella catarrhalis using the reagent-impregnated Catarrhalis Test Disk. Moraxella catarrhalis is an important pathogen. Yeun et al. have reported that the isolation of M. catarrhalis from routine sputum cultures is associated with clinical infection.2 Rapid identification of this organism is important, since most strains produce beta-lactamase and are resistant to penicillin and ampicillin.

  • Ready to use: Reagent-impregnated disk. No further preparation required.
  • Easy to detect: Visual detection of color change.
  • Easy to interpret:
    • Positive test- blue-green color development within 2 minutes
    • Negetive test- no color development within 2 minutes.

Catarrhalis Test Disk is impregnated with indoxyl butyrate as the reactive ingredient. The enzyme butyrate esterase releases indoxyl from indoxyl butyrate and spontaneously forms indigo in the presence of oxygen5. This color change allows rapid detection of M. catarrhalis.
