Thermo Scientific™ EC Broth
Description
Detect coliform bacteria at 37°C and Escherechia coli at 44.5°C from dairy sources and food with EC Broth.
Detect coliforms at 37°C and Escherichia coli from dairy sources and food at 44.5°C with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ EC Broth.
Hajna and Perry developed EC Broth to detect E. coli and other coliforms1. They reported that this medium can be used to examine water, milk, shellfish, and other material from feces that pollute the environment2. Previous methods were considered inadequate due to interference of injured cells that were sensitive to additives, temperatures and, selective media3.
EC Broth is a liquid medium used to isolate Escherechia coli. E. coli is an indicator organism that can indicate fecal contamination or unsanitary conditions.
- Ready-to-use: Convenience of prepared media.
- Selective: Contains bile as a selective agent that inhibits some gram-positive cocci and sporeformers.
- Recommended by American Public Health Association (APHA) and AOAC International (AOAC) 4-7 to detect coliforms in water, wastewater and food
EC Broth contains casein and meat peptones that supply amino acids, peptides and nitrogenous compounds that are necessary for growth of bacteria. Lactose acts as a ready source of energy and its fermentation leads to production of gas in the vial. Sodium chloride provides essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Dipotassium phosphate and monopotassium phosphate are buffers which help control the pH.
