Isolate and cultivate Mycobacterium species using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Middlebrook 7H11 Agar/Middlebrook 7H11 Agar Biplate.

Isolate and cultivate Mycobacterium species using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Middlebrook 7H11 Agar/Middlebrook 7H11 Agar Biplate. Dubos and Middlebrook developed a medium containing oleic acid and albumin to enhance the growth of tubercle bacilli and protect them against a variety of toxic agents1. Middlebrook and Cohn improved this medium and developed 7H10 Agar that allowed faster, more luxuriant growth of Mycobacteria2. Cohn et al. further supplemented this agar with casein hydrolysate to create 7H11 Agar that stimulates the growth of mycobacteria which otherwise fail to grow3.

Produce more screening details of pathogenic organisms while reducing storage capacity issues in the incubator with a bi-plate that includes widely used microbiological medium for the detection of Mycobacterium species.

  • Selective media – Malachite green dye inhibits contaminating bacteria other than mycobacteria
  • Ready-to-use – Convenience of prepared media
  • Space saving– Bi-plate format
  • Increased throughput Fewer plates to process per sample allows greater throughput in automated specimen processors.

Middlebrook 7H11 Agar is a solid medium that is used to isolate and cultivate Mycobacterium secies from specimens that contain mixed flora. Middlebrook 7H11 Agar contains casein hydrolysate that stimulates growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and inorganic salts essential for the growth of mycobacteria. Glycerol is the energy source. Sodium citrate provides inorganic cations in solution. Supplemental OADC Enrichment contains sodium chloride that maintains osmotic equilibrium abd dextrose as an energy source. Catalase destoys toxic peroxides that may be present in the medium, oleic acid is a fatty acid that is utilized in the mechanism of mycobacteria, and albumin protects tubercle bacilli against toxic agents.
