Effectively carry out microbiological testing of cosmetics using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Modified Letheen Agar. Weber and Black recommended the use of lecithin and polysorbate 80 based on their study on quaternary ammonium compounds1,2. Letheen Agar Modified is based on the formula in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual for use in the microbiological testing of cosmetics3. It is recommended by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) for cultivation of microorganisms from cosmetic sampling4.

This medium contains casein peptone and beef extract which supply nutrition necessary for the growth of bacteria. Letheen agar modified contains additional casein peptone which supplies nitrogen for enhanced growth of microorganisms. Yeast extract provides B-complex vitamins. Sodium bisulfite neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds, lecithin and polysorbate 80 partially inactivate quaternary ammonium compounds, phenolic compounds, formalin, hexachlorophene and ethanol. Incorporation of lecithin and polysorbate 80 to the medium enables the recovery of bacteria from materials containing residues of disinfectant compounds or preservatives used in cosmetics. Dextrose is a carbon source.
