Thermo Scientific™ NAC 100
Description
Digest and decontaminate clinical specimens for isolation of acid-fast bacilli and fungi using NAC
Digest and decontaminate clinical specimens for isolation of acid-fast bacilli and fungi with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ NAC (50 and 100). Respiratory specimens such as sputum contain mucin which trap microorganisms. Such specimens require liquefaction to release the mycobacterial cells prior to inoculation of media1. The N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) method is the widely used procedure for digestion and decontamination of specimens for recovery of Mycobacterium spp2. Reep and Kaplan demonstrated NAC can be used with sodium citrate as a diluent liquefies specimens for the recovery of fungi3,4.
NAC serves as a mucolytic agent by disrupting disulfide bonds in the mucous of sputum, gastric lavage and other body fluids.
NAC 100 contains 0.50g of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (CAS 616-91-1) and NAC 50 contains 0.25g of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (CAS 616-91-1) which needs to be diluted with sodium citrate to form a solution that liquefies specimens for the recovery of fungi.
