Thermo Scientific™ Oxichrome Reagent
Description
Rapidly detect the enzyme cytochrome oxidase in microorganisms using Oxichrome Reagent.
Rapidly detect the enzyme cytochrome oxidase in microorganisms using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Oxichrome Reagent. The oxidase test was originally developed to identify Neisseria spp., but later was used to separate pseudomonads from oxidase-negative enteric Gram-negative bacilli (Enterobacteriaceae)1,2. Most Gram-positive bacteria are oxidase-negative, pseudomonads are oxidase-positive, and other non-enteric, Gram-negative bacilli, are variable
Pseudomonads, bacteria of the family Pseudomonadaceae are a large and varied group comprising four major genera and several hundred species. Most species of the family are found in soil or water; some cause diseases in plants, and a few cause serious diseases in humans and other mammals. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, very common and widespread, is an opportunistic pathogen for man that causes antibiotic-resistive infections in persons of weakened resistance.
The oxidase reaction is attributed to the presence of a cytochrome oxidase system in the respiratory chain of certain bacteria, which utilizes molecular oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor3,4. Oxidase-positive bacteria produce oxidase enzymes which, in the presence of atmospheric oxygen, cytochrome c, and an oxidase reagent (Oxichrome Reagent), oxidize the reagent to form a blue-purple colored compound, Wurster’s blue.
