Description
Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) is a mitogenic agent which is used in studies involving cell permeability.
Carry out studies involving cell permeability with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). PHA is a mitogenic agent derived from extracts of Phaseolus vulgaris seeds and has twin properties of causing erythroagglutination and of stimulating progressive lymphocyte mitosis in cell culture. PHA has proved to be beneficial in the study of the immune response, lymphocyte kinetics, and bone marrow dynamics, and for these purposes it is desirable to use a substance which has more closely reproducible qualities and known potency.
Purified phytohaemagglutinin is a freeze-dried, highly refined protein fraction of selected Phaseolus spp. seed extract in which the specific mitogenic activity and the mitogenic/ haemagglutinating activity ratio have been increased by a factor of about 100/1 during purification. Both agglutinating and mitogenic activities of PHA are found to be associated with the protein fractions of crude extracts, which are sufficiently alike in their physico-chemical properties, thus it is difficult to separate them. Relatively crude extracts selected for their ability to yield good mitotic pictures have proved to be useful in routine lymphocyte culture for chromosome studies.

Purified phytohaemagglutinin contains a freeze-dried, highly refined protein fraction of selected Phaseolus spp. seed extract. Each bottle contains 2mg lyophilised phytohaemagglutinin (purified), dried from a small volume of buffered saline without preservative. The reagent may be reconstituted to any desired volume in sterile saline (if buffered, preferably to a pH between 6.5 and 8) or distilled water, using a sterile disposable hypodermic syringe.
