In 1981, Bopp et al. demonstrated the recovery rate of Legionella from environmental water samples was improved by treating samples with acid prior to plating onto selective media1. Buesching et al. demonstrated the recovery of Legionella organisms from clinical specimens was improved by pre-treatment with potassium chloride-hydrochloric acid solution (pH 2.2)2.
