Selectively isolate anaerobic bacteria from clinical specimens using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Schaedler KV Agar (w/kanamycin, vancomycin, blood, hemin, and vitamin K). In 1965, Schaedler, Dubos, and Costello developed Schaedler Base to recover bacteria encountered in the gastrointestinal tract and found it to successful in supporting the growth of fastidious anaerobic microorganisms1. Kanamycin and vancomycin are selective for gram negative bacilli and inhibit gram-positive organisms and facultative anaerobic bacteria.
Mata, Carillo, and Villatoro modified Schaedler formulation by replacing pancreatic digest of casein with tryptic soy broth2 and reported excellent recovery of anaerobic and microaerophilic organisms. Inhibitors were added due to the selective media when processing specimens containing commensal microbial flora. Schaedler Blood Agar contains sheep blood and hemin that stimulate the growth of fastidious microorganisms. Schaedler Blood Agar with CNA contain antimicrobial agents such as colistin and nalidixic acid that inhibit the growth facultative anaerobic bacteria.

The medium contains casein, soy, and meat peptones that provide nitrogen, amino acids, and peptides necessary for bacterial growth. Yeast extract enhances the growth by supplying B-complex vitamins. Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Dextrose provides an energy source.
