Thermo Scientific™ Starch Hydrolysis Agar
Description
Detect amylolytic activity or hydrolysis of starch by a wide variety of organisms using Starch Hydrolysis Agar.
Detect amylolytic activity or hydrolysis of starch by organisms with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Starch Hydrolysis Agar. Starch Agar was originally formulated by Vedder in the year 1915 for the cultivation of Neisseria1. Heart Infusion Agar is used as the base for Starch Hydrolysis Agar with the addition of soluble starch2. This medium is used for differentiation of Clostridium perfringens (positive) from other Clostridium spp.3,4
Starch Hydrolysis Agar is a solid medium recommended for use in qualitative procedures to detect amylolytic activity or hydrolysis of starch by a wide variety of organisms.
Starch acts as the substrate which the organism may hydrolyze by producing amylase.
- Ready-to-use: Convenience of prepared media.
- Easy to interpret: A colorless zone around the colonies indicates a positive test. Blue color around the colonies indicates a negative result.
Starch Hydrolysis Agar contains beef heart infusion and casein peptone that supply nutrients necessary for growth of all except the very fastidious bacteria. Yeast extract acts as a source of energy and procides additional nutritional requirements. Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Starch is the fermentable substrate.
