Thermo Scientific™ Stuart Transport Medium w/o Charcoal
Description
Stuart Transport Medium is used to transport and preserve microbiological specimens.
Perform transport and preservation of microbiological specimens using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Stuart Transport Medium. Stuart originally described Stuart Transport Medium1 and Stuart et al. successfully used this medium to transport specimens intended for recovery of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to the laboratory2. Moffett et al. applied Stuart formlation to preserve viability of fastidious organisms such as Neisseria spp. during transport from clinic to laboratory3. Cooper used this medium to transport swabs containing upper respiratory tract specimens and fecal specimens4.
Stuart Transport Medium is a non-nutritional medium that maintains the viability of organisms without significant multiplication. Transport media are designed to preserve the viability of microorganisms when immediate inoculation of growth media is not possible. Methylene blue is an oxidation-reduction indicator and the medium in the reduced state appears colorless and in the oxidized state blue in color.
- Ready-to-use – Convenience of prepared media
- Isolates – Recovery of Neisseria gonorrhoeae
This medium contains small amount of agar that provides a semisolid consistency which prevents oxidation and drying during transport. Addition of sodium thioglycollate produces a reduced environment to improve the recovery of anaerobes. The permeability of bacterial cells is maintained by calcium chloride. Sodium glycerophosphate maintains the pH of the medium.
