Differentiate enterococci from group D streptococci using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Tryptic Soy Broth with 6.5% NaCl. Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) was originally developed without the addition of serum or blood¹ for susceptibility testing of pneumococci to sulfonamides. In 1973, Facklam recommended use of TSB w/6.5% NaCl in combination with the bile esculin test to differentiate nonenterococcal group D streptococci from Enterococcus spp². Enterococci are salt tolerant and will grow in TSB w/6.5% NaCl while nonenterococcal group D streptococci will not grow in salt broth³.

Used for differentiation between salt-tolerant and salt-intolerant species.
