Thermo Scientific™ Xanthine Agar
Description
Differentiate aerobic actinomycetes on the basis of xanthine hydrolysis using Xanthine Agar.
Differentiate aerobic actinomycetes on the basis of xanthine hydrolysis using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Xanthine Agar. Mishra et al. developed a taxonomic scheme for aerobic actinomycetes on the basis of biochemical characteristics1. A simplified scheme for identification of most commonly isolated actinomycetes was developed by McGinnis et al. and includes tyrosine, xanthine, hypoxanthine, and casein tests2.
The aerobic acinomycetes are a heterogeneous group of genera and include the species of Nocardia and Streptomyces3. As a group, the organisms are gram-positive, catalase positive, and may be presumptively identified by staining procedures, microscopic morphology, and substrate degradation.
- Ready-to-use – Convenience of a prepared media
- Easy-to-interpret – Clearing of xanthine due to enzymatic hydrolysis around and/or under growth indicates a positive test. Growth without clearing of medium indicates a negative test.
This medium contains beef extract and peptone that provide carbohydrates, vitamins, nitrogen compounds and salts essential for the growth of aerobic actinomycetes. Peptone also provides nutrients in the form of amino acids and peptides. This medium detects the presence of the hydrolytic enzyme that degrades xanthine resulting in clearing of the media surrounding and beneath the areas of growth.
