Retapamulin is a semi-synthetic pleuromutilin antibiotic derived from the fungus Pleurotus mutilus It exerts antimicrobial effects by selectively binding the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit subsequently inhibiting bacterial protein biosynthesis In vitro studies have shown its antibacterial activity against various Gram-positive pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus Staphylococcus epidermidis Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus agalactiae Retapamulin exhibits inhibitory activity against strains resistant to other antimicrobial agents It is employed predominantly for topical applications in research involving bacterial skin infections caused by Gram-positive cocci including antibiotic-resistant strains
