Inhibit the farnesoid X receptor (FXR; Cui et al. J Biol Chem, 2003) and decrease chenodeoxycholic acid-induced FXR activation in the presence of 100 μM chenodeoxycholic acid with (Z)-Guggulsterone (Cui et al. J Biol Chem, 2003; Urizar et al. Science, 2002). This retinoic acid receptor pathway inhibitor induces differentiation of human pluripotent stem cell-derived neural stem cells into dopaminergic neurons (Gonzalez et al. Sci Rep, 2013); and decreases hepatic low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels in rodents fed with a high-cholesterol diet. It is also used in cancer research to regulate the growth and metastasis of tumor cells in human multiple myeloma cells and inhibit tube formation and migration in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (Xiao et al.
