A selective inhibitor of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RNAP). Has no effect on mammalian RNA polymerase. The RNAP-rifampicin complex locks the promoter in an abortive initiation reaction making short oligoribonucleotides which diffuse out of the active site. Inhibits α-synuclein fibrillation and disaggregates fibrils. Potent inducer of hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes. Alternative name: Rifampin, 3-(4-Methylpiperazinyl-iminomethyl)rifamycin SV.
