S-Methylisothiourea sulfate is a potent, selective, and competitive inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). It has shown beneficial effects in rodent models of septic shock and is for research use only.

  • Inhibits iNOS activity at the L-arginine site.
  • Prevents NO-mediated cytotoxic effects of LPS in cultured macrophages.
  • Exhibits inhibitory effects on LPS-induced nitrite production.
  • Does not inhibit xanthine oxidase, diaphorase, lactate dehydrogenase, monoamine oxidase, catalase, cytochrome P450, or superoxide dismutase.
  • Reverses hypotension and vascular hyporeactivity caused by endotoxin LPS in anesthetized rats.
  • Attenuates rises in plasma alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, bilirubin, and creatinine after LPS administration.
  • Improves 24-hour survival in mice treated with a high dose of LPS.
