Saikogenin D is isolated from Bupleurum chinense and possesses anti-inflammatory effects. It activates epoxygenases, converting arachidonic acid to epoxyeicosanoids and dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acids, which then secondarily inhibit prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production. It also leads to an elevation of intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) due to Ca2+ release from intracellular stores.
