Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) is an anionic detergent used primarily for protein denaturation. Available in 100g of powder form, it is widely utilized in protein analysis, particularly in SDS-PAGE (Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) for separating proteins based on their molecular weight. SDS disrupts non-covalent bonds in proteins, unfolding them into linear structures and imparting a negative charge proportional to the protein size. This ensures that proteins migrate uniformly under an electric field during electrophoresis. SDS is also used for protein solubilization, extraction of membrane proteins, and in various applications requiring protein unfolding and purification.
