Differentiate enterococci from group D streptococci and other Streptococcus species with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ SF Broth.

Differentiate enterococci from group D streptococci and other Streptococcus species with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ SF Broth. SF Broth was developed by Hajna and Perry to detect fecal streptococci in water, milk and other materials of sanitary importance1. Snyder and Lichstein had earlier demonstrated that sodium azide prevented swarming of Proteus and allows selective isolation of fecal streptococci from clinical samples. Fecal streptococci consist of enterococci and group D streptococci of human origin that usually occur in higher densities in animal feces2.

SF Broth is a liquid medium that is used to differentiate enterococci from group D streptococci and other Streptococcus species.

Enterococci grow in SF Broth and produce an acid (yellow) reaction, while other streptococci fail to grow and the medium remains purple in color.

  • Ready-to-use – Convenience of prepared media.
  • Bacteriostatic effect – Sodium azide is an inhibitor that exhibits bacteriostatic effect on gram-negative bacteria.
  • Easy-to-interpret – Turbidity and a yellow, yellow-brown color due to fermentation of dextrose indicates a positive test. Negative test shows lack of turbidity and no color change i.e the medium remains purple.

SF Broth contains tryptone, dextrose, sodium chloride, dipotassium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, sodium azide, brom cresol purple and demineralized water. Tryptone and dextrose supply nutrients necessary to support the growth of streptococci. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate. Sodium azide inhibits the cytochrome oxidase enzyme in the electron transport chain, thus exhibiting a bacteriostatic effect on gram-negative bacteria. Brom cresol purple is the pH indicator.
