Students will use PCR and electrophoresis to analyze simulated water samples for the presence of bacteria and viruses

  • Students analyze simulated water samples using PCR and electrophoresis to investigate real-world wastewater surveillance.
  • Engaging, hands-on experience with essential biotechnology tools to detect and identify pathogens.
  • Illustrates how wastewater testing provides early detection of outbreaks and supports public health decision-making.
  • This project was made possible by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA), Grant Number 2R44GM143977-02, from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  • Group Size: For 25 students working in 5 groups.
  • Kit Includes: Instructions, PCR EdvoBeads™, LyphoPrimer™ Mix, EdvoQuick™ DNA Ladder, DNA Templates, TE Buffer, UltraSpec-Agarose™, Electrophoresis Buffer (50X), SYBR™ Safe Stain, FlashBlue™ DNA Stain, Microcentrifuge Tubes and PCR Tubes.
  • All You Need: DNA Electrophoresis, Thermal Cycler, Micropipettes 5-50 μL, Blue Light Transilluminator, White Light Box (optional-use if staining with FlashBlue™), Microcentrifuge, and Microwave or Hot Plate.
  • Storage: Some Components Require Freezer Storage Upon Receipt.
