The formulation supports bacterial growth while enabling several key biochemical reactions used in microbial identification workflows. Black precipitate formation indicates hydrogen sulfide production, while indole formation can be detected after reagent addition. Motility is observed by the diffusion of growth away from the stab line in the medium.
