Skatole (3-methylindole) is a heterocyclic compound found naturally in the feces of vertebrates and certain plants. It is produced by intestinal bacteria and can induce apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells by activating aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR) and p38. Skatole is also used in the perfume industry and as a flavor additive in ice cream.
