SN-38 glucuronide is an inactive metabolite of the anticancer active molecule Irinotecan and has toxic effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Irinotecan is a topoisomerase I inhibitor used for researching colon and rectal cancer. SN-38 glucuronide can serve as a substrate for gut microbial β-glucuronidase enzymes, which remove the glucuronic acid moiety to reactivate SN-38, thereby increasing its toxic effects on the gut. SN38-G is the glucuronidated metabolite of SN38, and cells capable of metabolizing SN38 to SN38-G are more resistant to extracellular SN38 than cells lacking this capability.
- Inactive metabolite of Irinotecan
- Used for research on colon and rectal cancer
- Can be reactivated by gut microbial β-glucuronidase enzymes
