Sodium thiosulfate has been studied in many applications including dechlorinination and or debromination of water, and photographic processing. Because of its ability to remove chlorine, it is also used in bacteriological water assessment, as it promotes the survival of coliform organisms by neutralizing residual chlorine. It is also used as an antidote to cyanide poisoning, and in measuring the volume of extracellular body fluid and the renal glomerular filtration rate. It has been studied as treatment of calciphylaxis in hemodialysis patients with end-stage kidney disease.
