Standard Methods Agar, also known as Plate Count Agar, is the internationally recognized medium for determining the total viable count of aerobic microorganisms in food, water, and dairy samples. This formulation includes Tween 80, a surfactant that improves microbial recovery from fatty or difficult to mix samples. The emulsifying action helps disperse fat droplets and microbial clumps, allowing bacteria trapped within these particles to grow as individual colonies. By improving dispersion and colony separation, the medium produces more accurate microbial counts. Plate Count Agar is widely used in food safety testing, water quality analysis, and microbiological quality control programs.
