Succinylsulfathiazole is a long-acting, orally active sulfonamide antibiotic with localized gut-specific antibacterial activity. It inhibits bacterial folate synthesis, leading to reduced coliform counts, suppressed intestinal bacterial growth, and depletion of gut folate-producing bacteria. Beyond its antibacterial role, it modulates hepatic mTOR signaling, diminishes cecal fermentation, and alters folate and nitrogen excretion. This compound can also induce folate deficiency and related nutritional deficiency symptoms.
