The TAPS buffer, or N- [Tris (hydroxymethyl)methyl]-3-aminopropanesulfonic acid, is a zwitterionic "Good's" buffer commonly used in molecular biology for its ability to maintain a stable pH. With a pKa of approximately 8.44, TAPS is effective in the pH range of 7.7 to 9.1, making it suitable for capillary electrophoresis to analyze DNA, chromatogrpahy tenchiques to separate dyes, in cell culture media, as enzyme assay buffer, and many other experiments that require a moderately alkaline pH.
