Terrific Broth was developed by Tartoff and Hobbs to increase yields in plasmid bearing E. coli. It is an enriched medium suitable to increase the yield of plasmid DNA derived from E. coli strains, for non-selective cultivation of E. coli strains (for cloning high yield DNA plasmid production, and high yield production of recombinant proteins), and selective cultivation when appropriate antibiotics are added. The large amount of tryptone and yeast extract in the medium allows the bacteria to produce a higher plasmid yield.
