Sodium thioglycollate acts as a reducing agent, lowering oxygen levels and creating an environment suitable for the growth of obligate and facultative anaerobes. The addition of hemin and vitamin K supplies essential growth factors that support recovery of strict anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides and Clostridium species. The formulation is prepared without indole to reduce background reactions that may interfere with certain biochemical tests.
