Description
Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside, broad-spectrum antibiotic derived from Streptomyces tenebrarius. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Tobramycin is preferred over gentamicin for Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia due to better lung penetration. It is not effective against Enterococci.
It is used in combination with other antibiotics to treat urinary tract infections, gynecologic infections, peritonitis, endocarditis, pneumonia, sepsis, respiratory infections, osteomyelitis, and other soft-tissue infections. It is a potential therapy for sinus infections.
Tobramycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. It works by binding to a site on bacterial 30S and 50S ribosome, preventing formation of the 70S complex. As a result, mRNA cannot be translated into protein and cell death ensues.
