It consists of a tetrabutylammonium cation Bu3N and a chloride anion Cl-, with a methyl group CH3 attached to the nitrogen atom of the ammonium cation. TBMAC is commonly used as a phase-transfer catalyst PTC in organic synthesis. Phase-transfer catalysis involves the transfer of reactants from one phase usually an aqueous phase to another phase usually an organic phase to facilitate a chemical reaction. TBMAC helps in the transfer of ions or molecules between these phases, allowing reactions that might not occur under standard conditions. Some common applications of TBMAC include, nucleophilic substitution reactions, halogenation reactions or alkylation and acylation reactions.
